What Is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using your height and weight. The formula is: BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)². It is widely used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
BMI Categories (WHO Classification)
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25.0 to 29.9
- Obese (Class I): BMI 30.0 to 34.9
- Obese (Class II): BMI 35.0 to 39.9
- Obese (Class III): BMI 40.0 and above
Limitations of BMI
BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI but low body fat. Similarly, older adults may have normal BMI but low muscle mass. Always use BMI as one of several health indicators, not the sole measure.
